About the Author

How to Climb Harder is written and produced by Mark Reeves, who has been working as a climbing coach for over twenty years. As an author mark bring a myriad of different skills to the table when it comes to his climbing and coaching knowledge.

This high level of knowledge is reflected in his roles beyond this website, where he has written a for Climber Magazine for over 5 years and currently authors the coaching column for the magazine where he uses his knowledge of the Technical, tactical, physical and psychological aspects of climbing performance to help all climbers improve.

That knowledge has come from over 25 years of climbing to a high level (E5 – Trad, 7b – Sport & 7c – Boulders). Along with nationally recognised qualifications like the MIA (Mountain Instructor Award – which allow him to coach multi-pitched trad climbing). He also has a post-graduate Master’s Degree in Applied Sports Science with Effective Coaching, sports psychology and performance physiology.

Mark has taken his skills as a coach, instructor, guide and teacher across the world, working for an American company training mountain guides and climbing coaches in Chile, Argentina, Spain, Morocco and of course the UK. Back home he has worked with for the National Mountain centre as an associate instructor and even worked with the BMC and Mountain Training boards to help develop climbing coaching awards. Since 2006 Mark has also offered private rock climbing courses through his own small businesses Snowdonia Mountain Guides and Sunnier Climbs who specialise in Hot Rock Climbing Coaching Holidays in Spain.

With How to Climb Harder, Mark has bought all of this knowledge together in order to help you improve your climbing. In others words, we really do believe this website will do example what it says on the tin and tell you How to Climb Harder.

The amazing Toix, a great venue for climbing i the sun.

The Costa Blanca is one of the original winter hot rock destinations, situated just north of Alicante the area is cheap to get to and has an amazing variety of classic sport climbing routes and destinations. This is the reason we have chosen to run our climbing courses from here over the winter as they will suit anyone from the F4/VDiff leader to someone trying to break through into the 7th grade.

We are based around the sea side town of Calpe, which is nestled below the amazing Penon D’ifach. This is a great location from which to be based as it is close to the centre of the Northern region of the Costa Blanca best climbing. This allows us easy access Sella, Toix, Echo Valley, Alcalali, Olta,Puig Campana, Gandia and Guadalest.

All these crags have amazing single and even some great multi pitch climbing across the grades. So whether you are an indoor climber looking to make their first moves outside and learn the skills needed to sport climb. Or you are a harden 6th grade climber looking for some coaching to push into the next grades then these climbing holidays are ideal for you.

So if you want to escape the winter blues and driving rain in favour of sunshine, blue skies and warm rock then join us on one of our amazing escapes to the Spainish riviera. Our course include transport, coaching and shared accommodation in a apartment or similar.

Madrid Climbing Holidays

The climbing around Madrid is another of Spain’s hidden gems. With granite slabs and crags resembling Yosemite’s Touloumne Meadows. As such it will be unlike any hot rock sport climbing holiday you have ever been on. So whats on offer on our Madrid Climbing Holidays?

Based out of the picturesque Miraflores on the edge of the regional park of Pedriza we have a wealth of different areas to climb on in the area. Three are based on the granite cliffs around Pedraza, Valdemanco and La Cabrara, which offer fantastic friction slabs, cracks and corners. From simple single pitch climbs to exciting multi pitch routes to the summits of Granite Domes.

Just out of the mountains is La Patones, a pocketed limestone venue set in a picturesque valley with vertical climbing on often good but spaced holds.

This variety means that we will get to experience a whole array of different climbing on both granite and limestone.

This course can be run at a time to suit you during late sept to early November. The course includes accommodation and transport if required.

Picos De Europa Climbing Holidays

Picos De Europa Climbing Holidays are a great way to experience the best trad and sport climbing in this magical region of Northern Spain. We will help you get the most out of your climbing and the area.

Be under no illusions the Picos De Europa is an amazing place to climb, the area has some spectacular limestone crags with a variety of single and multi pitch sport climbing as well as some amazing trad routes in the Higher Picos. The main peak a gigantic limestone dome is ‘Naranga Del Bulnes’ and as well as having some harder routes also sports one of the most staggering Hard Severe routes in the world. The South Face climbs all the way to its amazing summit.

These are climbing holidays with the emphasis on fun, enjoyment and above all living a little adventurously. We can cater for anybody from beginners right through to experience climbers who wish to start looking beyond the usual Spanish spots like costa blanca for a sun rock holiday.

Slab Climbing on Cerro Agero

The Picos De Europa rises 2500m out from the north coast of Spain, its impressive peaks dominate the skyline and the steepness of the area is epitomised by the Hermida Gorge, along which there are many sport climbing venues. There are also some truly amazing multi pitched trad routes as spread across the region, many on large cliffs that can form almost mini alpine adventures. Away from the crowds and glaciers this area really does offer some of the best adventure climbing in Spain. Cerro Agero is perhaps the highlight of this gorge and has a variety of trad and mixed routes from long Hard Severe’s right the way through to alpine sized extreme grade climbs.

If the weather is too warm down in the Valleys then we can get the cable car up Fuente Du that leads you to the Southern end of the Picos Mountains where there are numerous limestone spires and mini alpine walls. Again from severe grades upwards.

Finally there is that jewel in the Picos crown, the Naranga Del Bulnes, a limestone tooth that dominates the range. With a short three hour approach to the mountain hut or bivi caves. We then spend a night before tackling one or more of the peaks fine routes. From the South Face at Hard Severe to the historic and challenging Ababa-Navarro route at 6c.

If all the climbing gets too much then we can always spend part of a day on one of the areas fine via farratas, the natural hot springs, The Spa or St Vicente beach surfing. This area really is an adventure playground for adults.

We offer a minimum seven day holidays, although we are based there for a month, so if you’d like to join us for longer then we can offer some discount on the prices. If you are interested in other sun rock destination then have a look at our Costa Blanca Sport Climbing Holidays
